Thoracic Oncology

The Department of thoracic oncology primarily treats patients with all thoracic malignancies such as tumours of the lung, oesophagus, mediastinum and chest wall. It also serves patients with pulmonary metastases from other cancers. Most patients require multidisciplinary treatment. Based on the latest available evidence, the patient is offered surgery (including minimal invasive surgery to improve operative outcomes) or a combination of chemotherapy/radiation therapy and surgery. In the near future, patients will also be able to participate in clinical trials.

Our thoracic surgeons offer video-assisted thorascopic surgery which is a minimally invasive approach. Our multifaceted team includes thoracic surgeons, radiation oncologists, pulmonologists, medical oncologists, pathologists, nurses, and social workers who meet regularly to review cases and provide opinions from their area of expertise. These dedicated specialists are regional leaders who are an integral part in developing less invasive surgical techniques that quicken recovery and provide options that are not readily available locally.

The goal of the Thoracic Oncology departnent is to treat most patients on a clinical trial or through an approach that represents the forefront of clinical care. Thoracic Oncology focuses the majority of their clinical research on areas of thoracic oncology where the standard treatment is poor and where the optimal treatment approach remains unclear. In diagnoses where standard treatment is a well-accepted approach, patients are provided access to cutting-edge approaches to deliver the treatment, including minimally invasive surgery and highly technically advanced radiation therapy treatment planning.
