- Imaging tests. An X-ray image of your lungs may reveal an abnormal mass or nodule. A CT scan can reveal small lesions in your lungs that might not be detected on an X-ray.
- Sputum cytology. If you have a cough and are producing sputum, looking at the sputum under the microscope can sometimes reveal the presence of lung cancer cells.
- Tissue sample (biopsy). A sample of abnormal cells may be removed in a procedure called a biopsy.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the signs of lung cancer?
Common lung cancer symptoms include coughing, shortness of breath, coughing up blood, loss of appetite and fatigue. However, the majority of patients experience no symptoms, which is why it is important for people with a high risk of lung cancer to undergo screenings.
Can non-smokers get lung cancer?
Yes. Smoking is the leading risk factor for lung cancer. But lung cancer also occurs in people who have never smoked or who did not have prolonged exposure to secondhand smoke. Other risks include exposure to asbestos, radon and other environmental chemicals. Non-smokers account for about 10 percent of lung cancer patients, and they have a higher incidence of mutations that may be treated with targeted therapies.
Does smoking cause lung cancer?
Smoking causes the majority of lung cancers in both smokers and those exposed to secondhand smoke, but it does not cause all cases of lung cancer. People who do not smoke or have never been exposed to secondhand smoke can be diagnosed with lung cancer — although, in these cases, the exact cause is not always clear.
Is lung cancer difficult to cure at any stage?
Even if lung cancer is not curable, it is almost always treatable. And thankfully, newer options often have fewer side effects than conventional chemotherapy, so you can enjoy a higher quality of life than previous generations who fought the disease.
Is lung cancer easy to survive?
The overall 5-year survival rate for lung cancer in the U.S. is 20.5% , according to the NCI. This means that about 1 out of 5 people with lung cancer will live for 5 years or longer after diagnosis. The outlook improves when a doctor diagnoses and treats lung cancer early.
